WHAT: Film Screening. When Shiba, a wandering ronin (outcast samurai), encounters a group of peasants who are holding a tyrannical landowner’s daughter hostage in hopes of forcing the magistrate to lower their taxes, he takes up their cause. He’s joined by two renegades from the magistrate’s guard. Director Hideo Gosha’s deliciously hardboiled swordplay thriller, shot in black-and-white Cinemascope, began its life as a hugely popular television series, which he also directed. (1964, 95 minutes.) In Japanese with subtitles.
