WHAT: Film Screening. What does a penniless samurai, Tsugumo Hanshiro (Tatsuya Nakadai), do when the clan he is working for collapses? In Harakiri, he has no recourse but to seek out a powerful lord and beg to commit ritual suicide at his manor with the assistance of three samurai as seconds. But Tsugumo’s bad luck persists; the lord’s retainers doubt his sincerity, and he is forced to wait for their assistance. While he does, he recounts the story of his disillusioned life that has led to this fateful day. Directed by Masaki Kobayashi, one of the great masters of Japanese cinema, the film is, in the words of Vernon Young, “played with something like demonic self-possesion by Nakadai. . . . The pace is calculated to extract every ounce of suspense.” (1962, 135 minutes.) In Japanese with subtitles.
