Spirit of White Buffalo Calf Woman

Role: The Bringer of the Light

White Buffalo Calf Woman

Many moons long since past, Ptesan-Wi as a Lila Wakan (or very Holy Spirit) came to the People during a time of great famine when the Seven Sacred Councils were holding Council Fire to appeal to Great Mystery for a way by which the Hunger would be taken from the People.

Chief Standing Hollow Horn of the Lakota Sioux, sent two of his best scouts to search for food to sustain the People. He instructed them that they should travel until they came upon some form of sustenance and not to return until they had done so.

And so the two young men headed toward the west were they traveled many miles in search of any sign of life with which the People could hope to continue their life, yet to no avail.
Finally, they decided that they would gain better vision of the area all around them by climbing to the top of the tallest of the hills that interspersed the plains.

Having reached the summit of the tallest of the hills, the two scouts looked in every direction in search of game, and still found nothing. Yet suddenly, from the west, came a lone figure.
At first, this figure was but a dot on the distant western horizon, no larger than a hawk, yet even from such a distance, a brilliant whiteness seemed to surround the figure.

As the figure drew nearer and nearer, it became evident that it was the figure of a woman and she was not walking upon the ground . . . she was floating above the earth.

The woman came to stop in front of the two scouts and her beauty stunned them. Upon her person she wore a dress fashioned of a white buffalo hide and decorated with the sacred quills of the porcupine sewn into the fabric in an array of color that adorned the dress.

In her arms she carried a large bundle also wrapped in buffalo fur and carried a spray of sage with the wrapped bundle.
Though both men were taken aback by her great beauty, one of the men was filled with lust for Ptesan Wi, while the other, sensing that she was a Holy Being, stood respectfully waiting for her to address them.

The scout who was filled with lust, attempted to grab the Holy Woman and as he did so, a mighty cloud covered the sun, and from its center emerged a bolt of lightning which struck the man, reducing him to nothing more than blackened bone and ash.

To the other man who had showed reverence for her presence, the Holy Being instructed him that he should return to his People and inform the Chief that she would come to them within four days time. She further instructed the Scout that a Medicine Lodge was to be prepared and sanctified so that she would be able to enter within and instruct the Chief and the tribal Medicine Man.

And so the young man returned to the tribe and related his encounter with the Holy Being to Chief Standing Hollow Horn who then sent the word out to the People that a Holy Woman would be coming to them, and to prepare the way for her arrival.

On the fourth day, Ptesan Wi arrived from the west, carrying with her the bundle wrapped in buffalo fur and the spray of sage. Upon her approach, the Chief invited her within the Medicine Lodge, which had been blessed and prepared for her.

The Lila Wakan then proceeded to add her own blessing to the Lodge and when this was done, and an altar was prepared in the center of the Lodge. The Woman unwrapped her bundle and held aloft the Chanunpa (Sacred Pipe). Then, as she handed the pipe to the Chief, she instructed him on how to use the pipe for Sacred Ceremonies, and revealed many details of the ceremonies to be performed, their purpose and intent, as well as the words that were to be spoken while the ceremonies were being conducted.

She taught them the importance of giving thanks, of showing reverence and gratitude for all that The Great Spirit provides, to invite in the Four Clan (Elemental) Chiefs, the Four-Legged Spirits, the Sky Nation, Mother Earth and Father Sky, the Winged ones and Finned ones, the Standing People (trees) and the Stone People so that all may be smoked and given Honor and Thanks.

She informed them that the pipe itself was Holy and symbolic of the Great Mystery’s work, as the bowl of the pipe represented the Earth Mother and all that is female, while the pipe stem represents Father Sky and all that is male. When the pipe stem is inserted into the bowl, this is symbolic of the Union of Male and Female and the act of Creation. It is the reminder of the Union of That Which is Above, with that Which is Beneath and the Cycle of the Sacred Hoop of Life.

She told them, "You will walk like a living prayer. With your feet resting upon the earth, and the pipe stem reaching into the sky, your body forms a living bridge between the Sacred Beneath and the Sacred Above. Wakan Tanka smiles upon us, because now we are as one . . . earth, sky, all living things, the two-legged, the four-legged, the winged ones, the trees, the grasses. Together with the people, they are all related, one family. The pipe holds them all together."

The stone bowl of the pipe was also to remember and honor the Buffalo Nation, which also represents the Four Directions. Wakan Tanka put the Buffalo in the West in the making of the World so that they will hold back the mighty waters. It is said that for every year, the Great Buffalo loses one hair, and that for every generation (world) he loses one leg. Then the Sacred Hoop will end when all the hair and legs of the Great Buffalo are gone and the waters come back to cover the earth.

The White Buffalo Calf Woman is She Who Holds the Four Ages of Creation Within Her. She informed the People that when the fourth world had passed, she would be back to usher in the Fifth World. She relayed many things that would serve as indications that the Fourth World had passed and that the Fifth World would soon be ushered in. One of these major prophecies indicated the birth of a white buffalo calf.

When she had finished instructing the People, the White Buffalo Calf Woman departed from their midst, reminding them to give thanks to Wakan Tanka and to perform the Sacred Ceremonies as she had taught them. Then she departed toward the west from whence had come and on the edge of the horizon, stopped, dropped to the ground and rolled, her human form transforming into that of a black buffalo. The next time she rolled on the earth and turned to a Brown Buffalo. Her third roll upon the earth she became a Red Buffalo, and the last time she transformed into a pristine White Buffalo and then disappeared over the horizon.

After her departure, the People lit the Sacred Pipe, giving thanks and performing the ceremonies as she had instructed them, and Buffalo in great number came to the people to provide the food which prevented them from starving, afforded them with the hides to fashion their tipis and for warm clothing. To this day, the People remember the Noble Sacrifice of the Buffalo, and keep honor and give thanks in the way that the blessed White Buffalo Calf Woman taught them.

In 1994, the first White Buffalo calf to be born since the early 1900s was born. The arrival of this first of four white buffalo calves to have been born within the last six years was born to a poor mid-west farmer and given the name of "Miracle.

This is the first of the signs that Ptesan Wi told the people to look for, and so many believe we are preparing to cross into the Fifth World when the White Buffalo Calf Woman will return to usher in the Fifth World, a time of peace, when all nations, races and religions will come together in Love and Acceptance. The Fifth World will be a time of great Spiritual Growth and Evolvement for the Two-Leggeds as they reconnect with the Earth Mother and learn that we can live in Harmony
and Balance with all Things.

This is a telling of the White Buffalo Calf Woman’s appearance to the Sioux Nation.
