2.2.07 Celebrating Tiawan Cinema @ HIGH
TIME: 8pm
WHERE: Richard H. Rich Theatre, located in the Memorial Arts Building, adjacent to the High at Peachtree and 15th Streets in Midtown Atlanta
WHAT: Film screening of "20 30 40"
FILM DESCRIPTION: This charming, perceptive film from director Sylvia Chang combines romantic comedy and introspective character study to observe the lives of three women in Taipei. Xiao-jie is an aspiring pop star in her twenties who has left her family in Malaysia to pursue a singing career. Her manager, an aging hippie songwriter, plans to pair her with another young hopeful and sell them as twins, emulating the successful Hong Kong girl-band The Twins. Older than Xiao-jie but certainly not wiser, flight attendant Xiang fills her life with drama a variety of romantic relationships. Florist Lily Zhao seems to have her life in order, but it’s turned upside down by her husband’s infidelity. Newly divorced, she discovers that dating at forty is a very different game. In his Variety review, Derek Elley praised the film as being among veteran director Sylvia Chang’s best, calling it “utterly classy,” a reflection of “the real Taipei, a vigorous, positive city.” (Taiwan, 2004, 110 minutes.) In Mandarin and Cantonese with subtitles.

2.3.07 Canada's Best @ HIGH
TIME: 8pm
WHERE: Richard H. Rich Theatre, located in the Memorial Arts Building, adjacent to the High at Peachtree and 15th Streets in Midtown Atlanta
WHAT: Film screening of "A Simple Curve"
FILM DESCRIPTION: Writer/director Aubrey Nealon grew up in the Kootenays, a gorgeous area in British Colombia with big lakes and bigger mountains—also the setting for Nealon’s poignant, semi-autobiographical film. His debut feature centers on the relationship between twenty-seven-year old Caleb, who has never left home, and his father, Jim, an American hippie who fled the U.S. during the Viet Nam War. Jim is an uncompromising artisan who makes fine furniture and has taught Caleb his craft. But his perfectionism is taking a toll on the business, and Caleb is forced to borrow money to make ends meet. The tensions between the recently widowed father and his son mount over a major commission and the presence of a pair of kids who take up residence on Jim’s land at his invitation. In his Eye Weekly review, Jason Anderson praised the director’s “snappy script . . . and defiantly regional sensibility.” A Simple Curve was named one of the Ten Best Canadian Films of 2005. (2005, 92 minutes.) In English.

WHAT: Film screening of "Fleeing by Night"
FILM DESCRIPTION: Praised by Los Angeles Times critic Kevin Thomas as “an exquisite love story directed with admirable subtlety and sensitivity,” Fleeing by Night is set during the late 1930s in Tianjin, where a wealthy businessman has invited a Beijing opera company to perform at his theatre. The businessman’s daughter, Ing’er, is very much in love with her fiancé, a cellist named Hsu, who has just returned from America. Although Hsu has no interest in traditional Chinese opera, Ing’er persuades him to hear the company’s star, Lin, perform. Hsu finds himself unexpectedly touched, and the couple becomes close to Lin. Formal etiquette demands that emotions be well concealed, so Ing’er is slow to realize that Hsu’s feelings for Lin go beyond the platonic, and neither Ing’er nor Hsu understands why Lin is truly free only on stage. (Taiwan, 2000, 123 minutes.) In Mandarin with English subtitles.

2.10.07 Canada's Best @ HIGH
TIME: 8pm
WHERE: Richard H. Rich Theatre, located in the Memorial Arts Building, adjacent to the High at Peachtree and 15th Streets in Midtown Atlanta
WHAT: Film screening of "Eve and the Fire Horse"
FILM DESCRIPTION: Writer/director Julia Kwan based her delicate, finely wrought period piece on her own experiences growing up Chinese in Vancouver during the 1970s. Her debut feature captures the inner world of Eve, who was born in 1966, the Year of the Fire Horse (notorious for producing troublesome children). She and her older sister Karena are the only Asian kids in their neighborhood. In a bid to fend off playground racists and to safeguard their parents, who were born on the mainland, they enroll in Catholic Sunday school. Thus, nine-year-old Eve finds herself caught between two worlds—her comfortable family home, where Buddha figures grace the mantel and the sounds of old Cantonese 45s fill the air, and the uncertain terrain of Vancouver, where disco and Jesus rule. Praised in the Toronto Globe and Mail as “funny, touching, and thoroughly enchanting,” Eve and the Fire Horse won the Audience Award at the 2005 Vancouver International Film Festival. (Canada, 2005, 92 minutes.) In Cantonese and English with subtitles.

2.16.07 Celebrating Tiawan Cinema @ HIGH
TIME: 8pm
WHERE: Richard H. Rich Theatre, located in the Memorial Arts Building, adjacent to the High at Peachtree and 15th Streets in Midtown Atlanta
WHAT: Film screening of "Bear Hug"
FILM DESCRIPTION: Director Wang Shaudi considers how the headlong pursuit of material success in contemporary Taipei takes its toll on families in this touching comedic drama. Da Jun is both spoiled and neglected by his soon-to-be divorced parents. Mom is a flight attendant who is most present in Da Jun’s dreams, and Dad is a busy professional who drops in at home only to nag his son about his poor grades. A chubby, teenaged cousin is the closest Da Jun has to a caretaker, but his bratty behavior and his cousin’s own adolescent crises make her less than sympathetic to his need for attention. Sharply written and leavened by bittersweet humor, Bear Hug was an award-winner at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Festival.

2.17.07 Canada's Best @ HIGH
TIME: 8pm
WHERE: Richard H. Rich Theatre, located in the Memorial Arts Building, adjacent to the High at Peachtree and 15th Streets in Midtown Atlanta
WHAT: Film screening of "White Skin/La Peau Blanche"
FILM DESCRIPTION: Montreal college student Thierry can’t stand redheads. It’s not their hair color but the transparency of their skin that repels him. Yet when he spots copper-maned Claire playing flute in a Montreal subway station, he’s smitten, and the fact that she’s passionate one moment and ready to break things off the next only adds to her intrigue. Still, there’s something decidedly strange about the girl, who has blood ties to another redhead, a prostitute who turned on Thierry’s roommate and slashed his neck with a knife. In the words of Eye Weekly’s Jason Anderson, Quebecois director Daniel Roby’s icy, romantic thriller “crosses genres and modes with considerable sophistication, cleverly integrating everything from Gothic horror to racial allegory.” White Skin won the Best Canadian First Feature Award at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival. (2004, 90 minutes.) In French with subtitles.

TIME: 8pm
WHERE: Richard H. Rich Theatre, located in the Memorial Arts Building, adjacent to the High at Peachtree and 15th Streets in Midtown Atlanta
WHAT: Film screening of "Three Times"
FILM DESCRIPTION: Virtually unknown to U.S. audiences, Hou Hsiao Hsien has directed eighteen films, many of which have received “best director” or “best film” awards in major international festivals. His elliptical storytelling, contemplative pacing, naturalistic direction, and sensual imagery stand out in Three Times, which has been hailed as his masterpiece. It is a rapturous trio of love stories shot in different styles and set in three different locales and eras: a pool hall in 1966, an exclusive brothel in 1911, and the urban landscape of today’s Taipei. In each tale, the same pair of actors, Shu Qui and Chang Chen, plays the lovers. Critic Roger Ebert hailed Three Times as “wise and heartbreaking . . . one of the great films of the year.”
