WHAT: Long before Galileo turned his telescopes to the heavens, naked-eye stargazers used giant quadrants and astrolabes to measure positions and motions of celestial bodies. The ancients developed elaborate models of the heavens and these models were artistically and beautifully displayed, such as the one depicted in fresco in the Carlos Museum exhibition In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite. The conceptions and the models were scientifically incorrect, of course, and Dr. Rick Williamon, Director of the Emory University Planetarium, explains these ancient misconceptions in a program titled Deceptive Skies: Ptolemys View of the Universe.

WHAT: Screening of QUE VIVA MEXICO! This screening will be accompanied by the world premiere of a score for chamber ensemble composed by Atlanta classical guitarist and musician Brian Mitchell, with Spanish narration read by Teodoro Maus. This legendary unfinished work by the giant of Soviet cinema, Sergei
Eisenstein, is a visually ravishing and poetic history of Mexico that
focuses on the country?s mythology, folkloric customs, and the social
unrest that led up to the Revolution of 1910. It was shot in Mexico in 1931 with financial assistance from the muckraking American writer Upton Sinclair. A series of personal, financial, and political disasters forced Eisenstein to abandon the project, and the unedited footage remained in the U.S. When the original materials were returned to the Soviet Union during the 1970s, Eisenstein?s former assistant, Gregori Alexandrov, using Eisenstein?s storyboards and outlines, edited a version meant to approximate the director?s original vision, which premiered in 1979. Brian Mitchell?s score will add a vibrant new dimension to Eisenstein?s exquisite images. The live Spanish narration will be translated onscreen in English subtitles. (Mexico, 1979, 100 minutes.) A free reception hosted by the National Society of Hispanic MBAs?Atlanta Chapter, HomeBanc, and the Institute of Mexico will follow the screening in the Stent Wing atrium of the High Museum of Art.

WHAT: Screening of SISTERS. William Faulkner famously said, ?The past is never dead. It?s not even past.? His observation captures the essence of this intense drama directed by Julia Solomonoff, an Argentine actress and Assistant Director of The Motorcycle Diaries. Sisters takes place in Austin in 1984 (though flashbacks return us to Buenos Aires in the mid-1970s) and follows what happens when long-separated sisters Elena (Valeria Bertuccelli) and her older sibling Natalia (Ingrid Rubio) reconnect after nearly ten years. Elena keeps house and cares for her son and husband in a pristine Texas subdivision a world away from Buenos Aires. Her English is poor, but she does her best to live up to the suburban ideal. Natalia, on the other hand, is an exile whose constant travels mirror her spiritual restlessness. She?s haunted by the death of her boyfriend at the hands of the Argentine military and seeks clues to his fate in a recently discovered manuscript left by her deceased father, a leading intellectual. In Solomonoff?s words, ?Sisters explores the silences of a family and a society that lived under fear, complicity, and concealment for too long.? (Argentina/Brazil/Spain, 2005, 88 minutes.) In Spanish with subtitles.

WHAT: Screening of "Sound of Brazil". Finnish director Mika Kaurismaki has adopted Brazil as a second home,
in part because of his love for its music. In Sound of Brazil, he
undertakes a 2,500-mile journey to explore the many faces of the country?s amazingly diverse musical culture. His film introduces viewers to members of the little-known Fulni-O Indian tribe, who were the first to sing and dance in Brazil; to the heroically famous Seu Jorge, a samba singer from Rio; and to the stars of Manca, Forro, and Afro-Reggae Samba. Sound of Brazil celebrates the resilience and creativity of the musicians and their audience. ?What we hear about Brazil in the media is, unfortunately, mostly negative, principally about violence and crime,? Kaurismaki says, ?but I have encountered many beautiful things too. What impresses me the most is the joy of life of the common people who suffer. Music plays a big role in the life of the Brazilian people; it can often be seen as offering a way out and a means of increasing self-esteem. Through their own music, I want to show the people of my current home their pursuit of joy, of alegria.? (Brazil/Germany/Finland, 2002, 105 minutes.) In Portuguese with subtitles.

WHAT: Although every night at 1763 you are more than welcome to come "in costume", Halloween is always a special time of year. Break out those special clothes and feel free to bring out that alter ego in you: fantasy characters, real life caricatures, gender switches, perhaps even the unthinkable as big "bad" leather doms become meek submissives. Well, we are all allowed to fantasize at times! There will be plenty of fun this evening throughout every inch of the largest public dungeon in the country!
INCENTIVES:Yes, incentives was mentioned! Between now and October 21st, everyone who attends a function at 1763 will receive a chance to win two free tickets to the 1763 Halloween Ball. And to clarify (in case a sudden fantasy came over you), the more functions you attend, the more entries you will receive into the drawing. Another incentive? Come in costume to the 1763 Halloween Ball and receive $5.00 off the regular $20 entry fee. No, this is not a fantasy but a definite reality!
