He went a bit psycho on them, and attacked them all for doing commerce on the steps of the temple.  He was saying that money had no place in the church and was rejecting the commercialism the temple had got into.

No, I know what the story was - I was referencing it in return to your comment about religion and commercialism. Sorry if that was unclear. It was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

I believe the story is repeated in all  4 gospels:

Matthew: 21
Mark: 11
Luke: 19
John: 2

There is  a lot of interpretation to this event, but considering that a majority of Jesus's followers (and Mohammeds) were the poor and downtrodden, the anti-elite message was likely there.  It just made sense.. it was a population ruled by the wealthy minority.  Christianity grew because it appealed to the masses.
